Departement de Vendee

Location
The Vendée is situated in the south of the ‘Pays de la Loire’, just below Brittany. It is a great place for holidays! La Roche sur Yon, the capital, was founded by Napoleon and is situated in the centre of the Vendée. The most famous coastal resort is Les Sables d’Olonne. The region has a shoreline 300 km long. Its long sandy beaches are interspersed with coastline which is rocky and rugged - a veritable feast for the eyes.

Climate
The summer is very pleasant, with temperatures between 25 and 32°C. The Vendée is in a zone which contains a micro-climate, a guarantee of as many hours of sunshine as you would expect to find on the Côte d’Azur. With its sunny beaches, ‘Les Jardins du Château d’Olonne’ is a dream destination for your holidays.

Beaches
The fine sand of the beaches is soft and agreeable to the touch. The beaches are wide, but it is always possible find a small kiosk to buy a snack or a drink. The sea is azure coloured and not too deep. A large part of the coastline has lifeguards so that holiday makers can dive into the Atlantic waves in complete safety.
Nature
Inland, there are the marshes, the fields and the wooded hills where visitors can amuse themselves in a variety of ways. For example, what would you say to a day on the waters of the ‘Marais Poitevin’ or ‘Green Venice’?
Towards the south is the village of Le Tablier, the departure point for an amazing walk along the river Yon. The Yon valley is exceptionally beautiful, rich with birds and plants.
Small picturesque islands, like Ile d’Yeu can be found off the Vendée coast. You can book reduced price tickets for crossings at reception.

Culture
The word ‘Vendée’ comes from the Vendée River. It has always been a place for farming, fishing and salt making. Vouvant is the most beautiful village in the Vendée and some would say that it is also the most beautiful village in France. The rich history of the Vendée can be seen in its many abbeys, churches and castles. There is even the ‘Puy du Fou’ theme park which focuses on the history of the Vendée. During the summer, more than 3000 actors present a part of the history of the Vendée within its celebrated light and sound show.

Children
Children can amuse themselves on one of the glorious Vendée beaches. Along the coast you can also find water parks, go-kart circuits, a farm for children and an aquarium, not to mention sporting activities such as tennis, mini golf and an adventure park. You have a lot of choice for children of all ages.
